Established Reputation
The Cricket Academy at SGS College has forged a strong reputation since it was founded in 2007 and has become established as a trustworthy performance pathway into professional cricket.
The Cricket Academy provides specialist coaches to teach all cricket disciplines and each student benefits from well-structured personal programmes, which focuses on the technical, tactical, physical and psychological side of cricket.
This approach has proven itself to help the individual and the team best prepare for competition. This is coupled with full time physiotherapists, who provide expert advice on injury prevention and strength and conditioning coaches who provide supervised sessions at our state-of-the-art gym.
Over the last decade, the Cricket Academy has established a strong fixture list by playing the all the top cricket playing institutions on both the schools and Association of Colleges circuit. This has provided a significant learning environment for the players at SGS College.
Significantly, the Cricket Academy annually competes in three national competitions including the National Schools Twenty/20 competition and both the Schoolsport Magazine National Schools U17 Cup and the National Schools Competition, which we have won and finished runners-up respectively in recent years. We also play competitive cricket against touring overseas teams and indoor tournaments during the winter.
The head of the Academy is Simon Hinks, who played 14 years of professional cricket and scored over 8,000 first class runs for Kent and Gloucestershire. Having worked in education for 20 years, he is keen to emphasise to each student athlete the importance of reaching their academic objectives at SGS College.
Links with Gloucestershire County Cricket
The Academy has a very proud association with Gloucestershire County Cricket Club and our students train weekly at the County Cricket Ground, where there is a range of indoor facilities including ball machines and two-lane practice nets.
Through this partnership, we attained a number of junior county level and full minor county level players and we have enabled elite players to follow top quality training programmes while studying on full time academic courses.
Two of our former Academy students, Craig Miles and Christ Dent are currently playing for Gloucestershire having signed professional contracts upon graduating from SGS.
