We offer young golfers a wonderful environment in which they are given every opportunity to drive their golfing abilities to their limits and beyond. A program that offers continual guidance and mentoring from expert coaches, who have many years of experience of working with talented young golfers and who have a proven track record of success.
We don’t stop there and ensure that our students have every opportunity to succeed in their chosen academic course be it A levels, B TEC’s or one of the many other courses available at SGS.
Our philosophy puts the student in control of their learning; we aim to build resilience, commitment and acceptance in our students giving them the life skills that will help them maximize their golfing skills but also enhance their abilities to succeed in the modern world.
They will not only be a better gofer when they leave us, but a better person.
The Golf Programme
Our golf programme revolves around the daily our students have with our two PGA professionals. They are with the students for some 250 days a year and are able to offer not only their considerable coaching knowledge but importantly work as mentors for the students.
The coaching takes place in a relaxed and friendly environment with a focus on working together cooperatively during sessions. They may well be paired up in order to offer encouragement and motivation to each other. It has to be said that golf is a solitary game but we believe we have the best of both worlds here at SGS with high levels of competition between talented youngsters combined with a collaborative approach to their practice sessions.
Each student is provided with a training diary covering planning sessions, lesson notes and evaluations of each session. The diary also contains a full program of testing in each area of the game and goal set performance plans. Using the diary helps the student take control of their own individual program ensuring they are working in not only a focused manner but with greater efficiency. The diary is also another great way of keeping in with their own coaches ensuring we are all working towards the same goals.
Sessions take place three times a week at the clubs. All transport is provided to all sessions, matches and ICT events. Monday and Friday are our practice days with the Wednesday reserved for playing. There are added sessions on our indoor range on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Technical Stuff
We have the latest V1 video systems and can email swings to our students or their coaches when required. The connection with our student’s home coaches is an essential part of our programme so we also use Edufii as a means of keeping up to date with all their latest coaching sessions. These videos are kept as a log of their two years with us; the changes can be amazing and also inspiring for the students.
Our latest acquisition at SGS Golf is the Flight-scope launch monitor. This really is an incredible piece of equipment which using missile tracking technology is able to give very accurate information about both the ball-flight characteristics and the club-head positions through impact.
Flight-scope technology can be used both indoors and out and is perfect for in-depth analysis in our indoor range. Guessing yardages with each club will be a thing of the past for the golf students at SGS, as each student will be able to check their yardages continuously which is an essential part of any good golfers skill-set.
We also have many golfing gadgets vetted by our coaches which given their correct use can be of great help with the technical areas of the game. These are available to use at each session under the expert eyes of our coaches.
The Mental Stuff
We believe in simplicity when it comes to the ever more important area of the mental game. “Keep what works and get rid of the rest”. Gathering quality information to plan your shot and keeping the target central to your routine are at the core of our philosophy. Simplifying your shot routine and maintaining a quite mind are skills that require practice and with the many hours of time you will have with our coaches, any problems can be talked through and ironed out quickly.
Our training diary includes mental assessments and goal sets all aimed at building that mental toughness displayed by all great golfers.
Strength and Conditioning
A full program of S&C, under the guidance of our full time conditioning coaches is available to the students. The students are screened for golf specific flexibility and have a full movement profile screening when they first arrive. They are tested for speed and power at intervals throughout the two years enabling us to show the students’ progress over time. Our program is periodical to fit in with the golfing season. Strength and power work in the winter and then moving into speed work in the spring and a maintenance program through the playing season.
We have a full time physiotherapist on staff that not only looks after any injury problems throughout the two years but also delivers a pre-hab program, which includes elements of Pilates and Yoga. We believe this to be a very important part of the long-term development of our students and one that is often overlooked.
Our first years are based at The Bristol GC, a short drive from the college. The Bristol has excellent facilities, which include the main course and a wonderful par three course. There is a floodlit driving range and putting green in fact all the aspiring golfer needs to work on every area of their game.
Our second years use the wonderful Players GC also a short drive from the college. They have two 18-hole courses the main course named the Codrington, which has held many professional events including the West Region Championships and Europro Championships and is a real challenge for any golfer. The Stranhan is a shorter course but requires excellent short game skills and has fantastic putting surfaces. Other facilities include a grass driving range and the exceptional Water Garden par 3 course a short game area and three putting greens.
These two facilities are among the best in the area and we are delighted to have developed mutually beneficial long-term relationships with both clubs.
Wise campus has become the home of The Bristol Academy of sport and boost fantastic facilities. With an eight-lane running track, 4G and 3G pitches, Gym, 5 aside pitches, sports hall, indoor-astro (better known as the indoor range to us golfers) there is nothing to stop you reaching your potential. Next to the Sports Academy Building is positioned the state of the art all weather putting green, and our two outdoor nets, a great place to sit and eat lunch while practicing your putting skills.
Tours and Working Trips
Our winter, warm weather training tour has become a favorite week for our students. Based in Portugal or Spain, the students get the chance to try out their skills in a week of training that culminates in a 36-hole tournament. This event is run collaboratively with the Tournament Golf College and Cornwall College, making the final two-day tournament a very competitive and high-level event.
Perhaps some of the most valuable and enjoyable events are our working trips to the Dunhill Championships at St Andrews, the BMW PGA Championships at Wentworth, the Ladies Open and the Seniors British Open. Our students get the chance to work behind the ropes and get a real insight into not only the players and their preparation and play but also the workings of a major tournament. These events are a great opportunity to look at the many careers in the world of golf which fall beyond the hoped for tour player role.
Over the last six years we have been able to provide a very lucky few students with the chance to work in Tenerife for a whole month. It is hard to quantify the value of this working trip to the sun other than to say that it is a fantastic add on to their CV and the quotes of the students themselves, “the best month of my life” is one of the most prevalent.
A full program of competition focuses on our order of merit events. Theses take place throughout the year and culminate in our Academy Championships run on both courses over two days. Preparation plans and evaluations of each event ensure the student learns what works for them in the pressure cooker environment of tournament play.
We also compete on the Inter Collage Tour, which runs nationally, and pits are students against the very best college golfers in the country. The students compete for a place in one of our two teams via their order of merit position or through qualifying events on the order of merit tour.
With 18 PGA Qualified professionals among our Alumni, over 30 University degrees and more than a dozen having received scholarships to American colleges, our students have a proven track record of success. There are many options for our students, from green keepers to club management and retail, to the PGA and of course a playing professional.
Contacts and Costs
Our aim is to provide not only a fantastic two-year experience that is available to all. For this reason we keep our costs to a minimum. Students are required to buy the team kit that presently is provided by Nike Golf. We insist that our students wear their kit at every session helping to build a strong team ethos. They will also have to pay for membership of their respective clubs which not only gives them full membership rites but unlimited golf ball use on the range.
There is also a facility cost covering gym use and instruction and providing free Physiotherapy access. The fee covers all time with the coaches, transport to the clubs and all competition fees and transport when playing for the college or on any working trip.
This package works out at the incredible value of £999 per year and can be paid on monthly bases. This is a tiny fraction of the costs you can expect to pay at private golf colleges.
