The PRIDE kicked off their 2017/18 Academic season with their toughest opening game they’ve played. The always tough Swansea Titans came to take on the PRIDE and despite jumping out to a quick lead the PRIDE were forced to the wire by the Titans big play offense led by Sam Huxtable. Offensively for the PRIDE there were lots of missed opportunities with dropped passes all over the field including in the endzone. Stitt kept plugging away with the passing game but offensively the most consistent performers were the running back trio of Owkonkwo, Setzekorn and Attama. Defensively the PRIDE also had some opening game issues, a pick six from Ngunjoh called back for a needless penalty and missing key defensive backs due to Great Britain caps the job become even tougher when import Majdoubi went down injured in the first quarter.

The PRIDE ran out 28-23 winners. The most points they have conceded to a British Team in 8 years. This was the second highest total of points they have ever conceded. No surprise then that Swansea went on to defeat the Birmingham Lions in the BUCS Premiership the week after. For the PRIDE they have now been competing against BUCS teams for 4 years without losing a game.

“This was exactly the type of game we needed. A real test and it shows our guys early on where we need to be. Our tackling wasn’t good enough, our catching was poor, we gave away far too much penalty yardage, we basically made it as tough as it could possible be to win, but still did. This team has the most potential of any I’ve coached. We have real depth in almost every position. This is going to be an exciting season” – Coach Herod
